I literally HATE the word 'try'. I have removed it from my active vocabulary. Why? Because it is a weasel word. It's a word usually attached to an action with a built-in failure clause. It is a self-limiting word used to avoid the sting of failure. It is a way to dodge responsibility for your actions.
It is an impossibility to 'try' to do something. It is akin to attempting to accomplish a task without taking any action. Just sitting there. Using all your mental energy to move or manifest something. Technically it is not impossible. By thinking you can come up with a way to avoid the action or convince somebody else to do it. By definition, doing is being an active participant in the making the task complete. TRY gives us an 'out' in case we fail to keep our commitment.
'Well I tried' is the beginning of a list of excuses as to why something did not happen that was expected. Whether it's to ourselves or to others a commitment was broken. Using the 'TRY' word is probably an excuse to avoid the 'NO' word. It's probably more honest to provide an outright 'No' or 'I don't want to' rather than a half-hearted 'I'll Try'. That's why I call it a weasel word.
Whenever somebody hits me with the 'TRY' word, I look them straight in the eye, smile and quote Yoda -- "Do or do not. There is no try." and then wait. Usually I get a sheepish look, some uncomfortable shuffling and then a more definitive answer. I would rather get an honest 'NO' than a weaselly 'TRY'.
